The Bernalillo Town Council met Dec. 23 for its final meeting of 2024, approving key budget resolutions and celebrating community accomplishments.
The council allocated a $500,000 competitive fire protection grant for Station 142 improvements and approved $2,160 for fire department overtime and $15,000 for increased jail fees.
Mayor Jack Torres said the town absorbed the $2,160 cost for fire coverage at Bernalillo High School football games, reinforcing its community commitment.
The council also approved a $900,000 capital appropriation from the state, allocating the funds to a new revenue and expenditure budget.
A third amendment to the Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) for the Sandoval County Regional Emergency Communications Center was approved, following Rio Rancho’s withdrawal. The amendment allows Sandoval County to hire staff and manage dispatch expenses. The remaining partners agreed to split the cash fund balance 50/50, pending final approval from the Department of Finance and Administration.
The council also authorized the use of remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for municipal projects and approved the 2025 holiday schedule. Financial updates showed the general fund at 37% of the budget, while the enterprise fund performed strongly at 51%.
According to Christina Jones, the economic & community development director, the town’s toy drive and coat drive were great events, helping about 150 families in need.
