WESST, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering economic growth and entrepreneurship, announced the appointment of Lindsey Kay as its new President, effective January 1.

Kay, a seasoned leader and entrepreneur, brings over 14 years of experience to the role. She founded Paws and Stripes at the age of 24 and served as its Executive Director for 14 years. Kay currently is the Vice President of Client Services at WESST (Women’s Economic Self-Sufficiency Team).

WESST is a statewide 501(c)(3) small business assistance organization that works to support individuals in New Mexico who want to start a business or improve the performance of an existing one.  Founded by three women in 1989, WESST targets its services to women, people of color and low-wealth New Mexicans. WESST has offices in Albuquerque, Farmington, Hobbs, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Roswell and Santa Fe.  Each office hosts a Women’s Business Center, funded in part by the U.S. Small Business Administration. 

According to a press release, Kay’s career has been focused on building strong teams and developing programs to support those in need. 

Kay earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico and her Master of Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University.

“WESST has a long history of empowering entrepreneurs and driving economic growth in New Mexico,” Kay said. “I’m honored to lead this passionate team and continue our mission of serving this beautiful and resilient state.”

Cheryl Hardt, Chair of WESST’s Board, expressed confidence in Kay’s ability to lead WESST into the future. 

“Lindsey’s strong leadership, proven track record, and passion for our work make her the ideal choice,” Hardt said.

Agnes Noonan, the retiring President of WESST after 33 years, will work closely with Kay to ensure a smooth transition. Noonan expressed satisfaction with the organization’s solid foundation and her confidence in Kay’s ability to lead WESST forward. Noonan said she “is pleased WESST hired someone of Lindsey’s experience and passion for the mission and the people we serve.”
