Former Republican candidate John D’Antonio Jr. announced last week his endorsement of Democrat Michelle Sandoval in her campaign for New Mexico’s House District 57.
The endorsement comes after D’Antonio lost the primary election in June to Catherine Cullen by less than 60 votes.
A press release from Sandoval’s camp said with the endorsement, D’Antonio is “demonstrating a commitment to putting the community’s best interests ahead of party lines.”
“I’ve always believed that good governance transcends party affiliation,” D’Antonio said. “Michelle has shown an unwavering dedication to the people of our district. She reflects a deep understanding of the issues that matter most to us, and I believe she is the right person to represent us in the New Mexico House of Representatives.”
Sandoval, who is currently on staff at Los Alamos National Labs, has built a campaign focused on public safety, health care and education. Her platform aims to unite constituents across the political spectrum to tackle the challenges facing their community.
“I am honored to receive John’s endorsement,” Sandoval said. “It is a testament to our shared commitment to serving the people, regardless of our political differences. Together, we can work towards a brighter future for our district, prioritizing collaboration and solutions over divisiveness.”
D’Antonio served as the New Mexico state engineer under three governors and was secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department. He and his wife own a water resource consulting business in Rio Rancho.
Sandoval and Cullen, a former Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education member, are running for the District 57 seat that has been held by Jason Harper since 2013. Harper announced in March that he would not run again.
