Gerred Prairie was sworn in as the newest Bernalillo town councilor on Sept. 9.

The Bernalillo Town Council unanimously approved Gerred Prairie as the town’s newest councilor during its Sept. 9 meeting.

In an emotional ceremony, Municipal Judge Geoffrey Rinaldi swore him in as his family gathered around to support him.

Gerred is the son of Dale Prairie, who died unexpectedly Aug. 23 after serving 23 years on the council. Prairie’s service spanned two separate terms: nine years during his initial tenure and another 14 years following his election in 2010. In addition to his role as councilor, Prairie served as mayor pro tem, stepping in as acting mayor when needed.

“I always told my dad I wanted to be just like him. He always used to tell me, ‘No, you have to be better than me, make a name for yourself’ and I think I’ve been doing that,” Prairie said.

In an email to Torres expressing his interest in the appointment, Gerred Prairie highlighted his experience, having worked for the Sandoval County Assessor’s Office for more than 20 years. During his time there, he served as a mobile home appraisal specialist.

In addition to his role with the Assessor’s Office, Prairie has been involved with Bernalillo Public Schools, coaching sports across all grade levels. Currently, Prairie works as a gym and field manager, overseeing the rental of facilities for community use.

“I have no questions that he’ll be an excellent councilman,” Mayor Jack Torres said. “He knows about the responsibilities before him. Most importantly, he comes before you with experience, background and a personality that a public servant should have.”

Councilor Vincent Montoya said he couldn’t think of anybody better to fill the seat.

Prairie will serve the remainder of his father’s term, which runs until March 2026. In his email to the mayor, he also expressed his intention to run for the council seat once the term is completed.
