Staff report

An area of Cherry Road was the pits this weekend as a water main break wreaked havoc on traffic and opened up a sinkhole that swallowed a Rio Rancho Police Department vehicle.

The City of Rio Rancho announced the water main break around 6 a.m. Sunday. By noon Monday, the repair work was completed, but Cherry remained closed between Penasco Road and Unser Frontage Road “until permanent roadway repair work can be performed.”

RRPD said it was an “unexpected night at the office for Officer Cory Marquez. Thankful, he walked away unharmed, just very muddy and wet.”
