A Chipper Day event is set for 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the San Antonio de Las Huertas Land Grant, at the west end of Placitas.

A suggested donation of $5 to $10 is encouraged, with all proceeds going toward the rental of the chipper.

To help reduce wildfire risk from overgrown trees and shrubs, the Coronado Soil and Water Conservation District, with support from Las Acequias de Placitas and Las Huertas Community Ditch, is sponsoring Chipper Day, where community members can bring small trees and branches for chipping.

The event will accept branches up to 6 inches in diameter, with ends aligned in the same direction for the chipper. Construction waste and barbed wire will not be accepted.

Participants are encouraged to take the chipped wood for mulch, or they can leave it for others. The mulch and remaining wood chips will be available to residents for a few days or until they’re gone.

At the last Chipper Day in June, the machine processed 33 loads of brush, 15 of which were second or third loads from the same residents.
