On Monday, Jan. 22, The Town of Bernalillo held its regular Town Council meeting councilors met to discuss plans for a new fire station, the allocation of funds for rehabbing the town’s swimming pool, and a budget resolution for the Enterprise Fund.

New Fire Station

The new fire station seemed to be the fastest piece of business from the council this meeting. The new fire station is set and in the beginning stages of its process. At the public meeting, they came to a conclusion of what plan and design to use for the new building.

About six companies submitted plans and designs but the one from MolzenCorbin was chosen for the project.

“It’s a big building, you don’t get to do them very often. And it’s something that the community is always very proud of. So we’re definitely happy to be part of it. And appreciate the selection,” said Kevin Eades, President and CEO of MolzenCorbin.

The fire station is still in its early development stages and does not yet have a confirmed date of when it should be expected to open.

Funds for Town’s Swimming Pool

The second piece of business at the meeting was the discussion of the allocation of ARPA funds for the rehabilitation of the town’s swimming pool. With this item being approved by the council that means $54,000 in funds will be reallocated for the town’s swimming pool.

The money allocated will mostly be used to replaster the pool. The pool that was originally built in 2005 has not seen new plaster in its 19 years. The replastering will not affect any of the pool’s inlets, main drains, or skimmers as the pool seems to be operating at 100% capacity. The main concern is the plaster that needs to be redone.

The money will be used strictly for replastering, chipping out any of the existing plaster, doing the stripes, and the new tiles. Even though the last plaster lasted for the swimming pool for close to 20 years because of the upkeep of the pool, it’s time to replaster and make the pool an even safer place for families.

Budget Resolution for the Enterprise Fund

A budget adjustment was needed for FY 2023/2024. This would affect two funds allocated for the water utility budget. Several water pump systems throughout the town need significant maintenance and town councilors ponied up the money to fix them to the tune of $155k.

This money that has been approved will not come out of any general funds instead it will all come out of the cash balance from the utility.

All three items of business were approved unanimously.

The next Town Council meeting is scheduled for February 12 at 6:30 p.m.
