A “Bloodless” Occupation
Learn about a lesser known part of New Mexico history from a former state historian when Robert Torrez gives a talk about “The U.S. ‘Bloodless’ 1846 Occupation of New Mexico, Revolt and Treason Trials of 1847” at historic Old San Ysidro Church on Sunday, Oct. 22.
Torrez’s talk is part of the series put on by the Corrales Historical Society and is free to the public.
Torrez, who served as state historian from 1987 to 2000, has done extensive research on New Mexico’s history before and after statehood. He has published more than 100 scholarly articles, contributed to nearly two dozen books and anthologies and a monthly column in “Round the Roundhouse.” According to a news release, his research has explored judicial systems of the state’s Spanish, Mexican and territorial periods, Spanish and Mexican land grants, Hispano-Indian relations, Indian slavery and peonage and genizaros.
At the Corrales event, Torrez will tell of the events that led to the 1846 war between Mexico and the United States and the so-called “bloodless” conquest of New Mexico by U.S. Gen. Stephen Watts Kearny.
The talk will begin at 2 p.m., but it’s recommended you arrive early. Only 150 seats are available on a first come, first serve basis. Saving seats is not allowed.
